Richard Morrison is scum. All I can picture is a scared and exhausted Sonnet trying to make sense of the uncontrollable symptoms happening in her body. In the few days and meals we’ve shared, I know she’s conscientious of what she eats and regularly exercises. Her toned muscles and curves suggest years of discipline, not just a temporary lifestyle change due to the wedding or medical diagnosis. In her shoes, I would feel betrayed by my own body. It’s a relief that she’s abstinent because at least she hasn’t had to go through the potential devastation of trying to have a child with that man.

As we drive through the vineyards to the main buildings of Castello Vicchiomaggio, I regret not eating more than gelato in San Gimignano. My snacks may come in handy sooner rather than later. The estate reminds me of the location where my cousin Matteo got married two years ago. When his then-fiancé/now-wife ran the idea of a vineyard wedding by him, he quickly agreed. Matteo loves wine almost as much as he loves her.

Once we all gather in a crowd outside, Brandy introduces herself as the winery tour guide. She leads us into the maturing cellar filled with French oak barriques and large barrels. I listen to Brandy’s explanation of the process used to create the wines, but when Sonnet slips her fingers through mine, I’m a lost cause. If Brandy gives us a quiz at the end requiring us to know the difference between Chianti and Chianti Classico wines, I’ll only know the answer because my father taught me about Italian wines. He ensured I was a wine expert before I was old enough to order wine in the States.

I glance at Sonnet and smile at the slight confusion on her face. She’s just as lost as I am, but she doesn’t possess the same background knowledge I have. We’ve been privy to wine at every dinner, and she has yet to taste more than a sip of any of them. Part of me wants to take on the challenge of finding a wine that she likes.

We walk into the tasting room, and I subtly nod toward the restrooms to ask her if she needs to go. She smiles at me gratefully and lets go of my hand before slipping away toward the women’s restroom. I save her a spot next to me across from Lawrence and Jean.

“Watching you two is like watching one of my favorite Hallmark movies,” Jean whispers across the table to me. “Have you two talked about how you’ll handle things once you’re no longer in Italy?”

Jean’s question takes me by surprise because it’s coming from Jean. My feelings for Sonnet aren’t a secret, but I’ve been so caught up in trying to understand and analyze them that I hadn’t made a plan for how to explain them to others on this tour.

Lawrence comes to my rescue and says to his wife, “Maybe we should mind our business concerning their relationship. Real life isn’t a Hallmark movie.
